By Default Windows Vista just like XP has MenuShowDelay set to 400 this in simple terms means that the alertness off your start menu is delayed slightly if you wish to make it so that there is no delay what so ever, follow this tutorial and change this value to 0.
Please Note: Always backup your Registry before making any changes.
Click on the Start Button. (see image if unsure)
Type Regedit into the search bar and press Enter.
Type Regedit into the search bar and press Enter.
At this point your screen will glaze over and you will be asked to confirm your selection
(Windows will not take a screenshot of this screen!!)
Click Continue and Regedit will open.
Double click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER to expand folder.
Double click on Control Panel to expand folder.
Double click on Desktop to expand folder.
On the right hand side of the registry editor window you will see quite a few entry's, scroll down that window until you find MenuShowDelay
Double Click MenuShowDelay and change the value from 400 (which is default) to 0 and click OK
Close Registry Editor
For Registry Changes to Take effect you may need to restart your computer.
After you have restarted you will see an increase in the time that it takes for your start menu to display and for the sub folders within your start menu they will display faster then before as soon as you hoover your mouse over in fact.
