In this tutorial I am going to show you how to backup your Registry for peace of mind. This is very useful if you with to play about with the registry and possibly change a few settings around to see if you can improve your computers performance, if you make a mistake or cause an adverse affect on your computer then you can restore to your previously backed up state.
Click on the Start Button
Type Regedit into the search bar and press Enter.
At this point your screen will glaze over and Windows will ask you for permission to run this command, Click Continue and Registry Editor will open. (Windows will not let me take a screenshot of this screen!! sorry about that.)
Within the Registry Editor Windows Click File and then Click Export as seen in the image below.
Name your Backup something like Registry_Backup_Date replacing Date with the actual date.
Change Export Range to All
Click Save.
Give your computer a moment to complete the task and then you should have something that looks like the image below where you saved the backup.
Close Registry Editor.
You have now successfully backed up your Windows Vista Registry, If you have any issues in the future with your registry while editing keys then revert to this backup by double clicking the icon and follow the instructions. All being well you will never have to use this Registry Backup.
